How to play basketball: THE 5 BASKETBALL ELEMENTS
If a building has a poor or shaky foundation, its going to crumble during an earthquake. In order to build something strong that lasts, you need a SOLID FOUNDATION.
Many players can play basketball, but don't know HOW to play basketball.
In the game of basketball, a good solid foundation = GOOD FUNDAMENTALS.
The 5 elements of basketball
- Shooting
- Dribbling
- Passing
- Rebounding
- Defense
Many good basketball players are pretty good in a few of those areas and just average in the others. Very seldom will you find a basketball player that is skilled and dedicated in all 5 elements.
Scoring points gets all the glamour and glitz. Hey, it’s satisfying to score on somebody whose job it is to stop you. But as mentioned before, if you can’t stop the other player from scoring, then you’re ultimately playing a losing game.
Some players have it all: hops, speed, strength, height, etc…
*drumroll please* None of that ain’t worth a lick if you don’t have proper fundamentals!
Don’t get me wrong, possessing these physical attributes can certainly enhance a player’s overall game. But what good is a fast flashy car if it breaks down every week?
Look at Larry Bird, who played for the Boston Celtics.
- not fast
- no leaping ability
- unimpressive physique
BUT…
- great shooter
- good dribbler
- excellent passer
- fantastic rebounder
- great defender
BINGO!
You see, none of these things have anything to do with being born fast or tall. So to sum it up, focus on learning the FUNDAMENTALS of basketball and then practicing them.
Why practice?
Basketball practice, its in the gym, roll up your sleeves time
